Description
Overview of the medicine
Texit 100 mg Suspension is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic containing Cefixime, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years or weighing >50 kg: 200-400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours. For 100 mg/5 ml suspension, this would be 10-20 ml once daily or 10 ml every 12 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is needed unless severe renal impairment is present.
Children
Children 6 months to 12 years: 8 mg/kg/day once daily or 4 mg/kg every 12 hours. (Maximum 400 mg/day).
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min: 75% of the standard dose. For creatinine clearance < 20 mL/min: 50% of the standard dose.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the suspension well before each use. Use the provided measuring device for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 2-6 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine (about 50%) and bile (about 10%) as unchanged drug.
Half life
The plasma elimination half-life is typically 3-4 hours, potentially longer in elderly or renally impaired patients.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food can slightly delay time to peak concentration but does not significantly affect overall absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized in the body. No active metabolites have been identified.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin (due to potential cross-reactivity).
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
Concurrent use may increase cefixime bioavailability and peak plasma concentrations.
Probenecid
May decrease the renal excretion of cefixime, leading to increased and prolonged plasma concentrations.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant administration may increase carbamazepine plasma levels. Monitoring of carbamazepine levels should be considered.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is recommended.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Store the reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use in pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted into human breast milk in small quantities; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing woman.
