Description
Overview of the medicine
Texit 200 mg capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children > 12 years or > 50 kg: 200 mg once daily or 100 mg twice daily. For severe infections, may be increased to 400 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
CrCl 21-60 mL/min: 75% of standard dose. CrCl < 20 mL/min: 50% of standard dose or 200 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
May be taken with or without food. To be swallowed whole with water.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which prevents the final transpeptidation step of peptidoglycan synthesis. This disrupts the cell wall, leading to bacterial lysis and death.

Renal excretion (approximately 50% unchanged in urine), and also biliary excretion.

3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporins
- •History of anaphylactic reactions to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time and INR; monitor coagulation parameters closely.
Probenecid
Increases Cefixime peak concentration and AUC by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Increased Carbamazepine levels reported with concomitant use.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives; use alternative contraception.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in low concentrations in breast milk; caution advised during lactation.
