Description
Overview of the medicine
Ticason is a topical corticosteroid used to reduce inflammation and itching in various skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin film to the affected skin area once or twice daily, as directed by a physician. Do not exceed the prescribed duration.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but caution is advised due to potentially thinner skin and increased absorption.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is typically necessary due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For external use only. Apply sparingly to the affected area and rub in gently. Wash hands after application unless the hands are the treated area.
Mechanism of Action
Ticason (Fluticasone Propionate) binds to glucocorticoid receptors, leading to the inhibition of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes, thus reducing inflammation, itching, and vasoconstriction.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Relief within a few days of consistent application.
Excretion
Mainly excreted in faeces as inactive metabolites; some via urine.
Half life
Not well defined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption; for systemic Fluticasone, half-life is around 7.8 hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin; absorption increases with inflamed skin, occlusive dressings, and prolonged use.
Metabolism
Primarily metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4 into inactive metabolites once absorbed systemically.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Fluticasone Propionate or any component of the formulation.
- •Untreated cutaneous infections (viral, bacterial, fungal).
- •Acne vulgaris, rosacea, perioral dermatitis.
- •Pruritus without inflammation.
Drug Interactions
CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., Ritonavir, Ketoconazole)
May increase systemic exposure, particularly with prolonged or extensive use, leading to potential systemic corticosteroid effects. Caution advised.
Storage
Store below 30°C, protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Acute overdose is unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption. Chronic overdose or misuse (e.g., extensive application, prolonged use, occlusive dressings) may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects such as Cushing's syndrome, hyperglycemia, or adrenal suppression. Management involves gradual withdrawal under medical supervision.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Use with caution during lactation; it is not known whether topical Fluticasone is excreted in human milk.
