Description
Overview of the medicine
Tracid 500 mg Injection contains Tranexamic Acid, an anti-fibrinolytic agent used to prevent and treat excessive bleeding. It works by inhibiting the breakdown of blood clots, thereby promoting haemostasis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 500 mg to 1000 mg (1-2 ampoules) by slow intravenous injection 2-3 times daily, or as a continuous infusion. Dosage varies based on indication.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Standard adult dose usually applies if renal function is normal.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required in patients with renal impairment. Consult product leaflet or medical professional.
How to Take
Administer by slow intravenous injection (1 mL/minute to avoid hypotension) or as a continuous intravenous infusion. Do not administer intramuscularly.
Mechanism of Action
Tranexamic acid competitively inhibits the activation of plasminogen to plasmin. Plasmin is an enzyme responsible for the degradation of fibrin clots, a process called fibrinolysis. By blocking plasmin, tranexamic acid stabilizes the clot and prevents its premature breakdown, thereby reducing bleeding.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, within minutes of IV administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine via glomerular filtration.
Half life
Approximately 2 hours.
Absorption
Following intravenous administration, absorption is complete.
Metabolism
Very little metabolism; mainly excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
