Description
Overview of the medicine
Tracid 500 mg Tablet is an antacid containing Calcium Carbonate, used for the relief of indigestion, heartburn, and sour stomach. It can also be used as a calcium supplement.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For antacid effect: 1-2 tablets chewed as needed, up to 7 tablets in 24 hours. For calcium supplementation: 1-2 tablets daily or as directed by physician.
Elderly
Same as adult dosage, but monitor for hypercalcemia if used as a supplement.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution. Avoid high doses due to risk of hypercalcemia and accumulation.
How to Take
Chew tablets thoroughly before swallowing. Can be taken with or without food. For antacid effect, take after meals or at bedtime, or as symptoms occur.
Mechanism of Action
Calcium carbonate acts as an antacid by neutralizing gastric acid. It reacts directly with hydrochloric acid in the stomach to form calcium chloride, water, and carbon dioxide, thereby increasing gastric pH and relieving symptoms of acidity. As a calcium supplement, it provides essential calcium ions for bone health and various physiological functions.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within 5-15 minutes for antacid effects.
Excretion
Unabsorbed calcium is excreted in feces. Absorbed calcium is primarily excreted via kidneys.
Half life
Not directly applicable for antacid action; systemic calcium has a long biological half-life due to its storage in bone.
Absorption
Approximately 20-30% of calcium is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, primarily in the duodenum.
Metabolism
Calcium carbonate is not metabolized in the traditional sense; it dissociates into calcium and carbonate ions. Carbonate is converted to CO2.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to calcium carbonate
- •Hypercalcemia
- •Severe renal impairment
- •Nephrolithiasis (kidney stones)
- •Hypophosphatemia
Drug Interactions
Bisphosphonates
Decreased absorption of bisphosphonates; take calcium carbonate at least 30 minutes after bisphosphonate.
Iron supplements
Decreased iron absorption; take calcium carbonate several hours apart.
Thiazide diuretics
Increased risk of hypercalcemia.
Tetracyclines/Fluoroquinolones
Decreased absorption of antibiotics; take calcium carbonate several hours apart.
Thyroid hormones (Levothyroxine)
Decreased absorption of thyroid hormones; take calcium carbonate at least 4 hours apart.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include hypercalcemia (nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion, fatigue, muscle weakness) and milk-alkali syndrome (hypercalcemia, metabolic alkalosis, renal impairment). Treatment involves discontinuation of calcium carbonate, hydration, and management of hypercalcemia.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally considered safe during pregnancy and lactation when taken within recommended doses, especially for calcium supplementation. Consult a doctor for high doses or prolonged use as an antacid.
