Description
Overview of the medicine
Triocim 200 mg Capsule contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200-400 mg daily as a single dose or in two divided doses for 7-14 days depending on the infection. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, a single 400 mg dose.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 21-60 mL/min: 300 mg daily. For creatinine clearance <20 mL/min: 200 mg daily.
How to Take
Triocim 200 mg Capsule can be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take it at the same time each day to maintain consistent drug levels. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside the bacterial cell wall. This leads to inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis, resulting in bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Approximately 50% of the absorbed dose is excreted unchanged in the urine over 24 hours. The remainder is excreted via non-renal mechanisms, likely biliary excretion.
Half life
3 to 4 hours (range 2.5-6 hours)
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Absorption may be slightly delayed by food but total amount absorbed is not significantly affected.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the liver; limited metabolism known.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of serious hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
May increase cefixime concentrations.
Carbamazepine
Concomitant administration may increase carbamazepine plasma concentrations.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (PT) with or without bleeding. Monitor PT/INR carefully.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. Treatment should be supportive and symptomatic.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefixime is excreted in small amounts in human milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
