Description
Overview of the medicine
Tymox 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic from the penicillin group, used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. This formulation is often used in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250 mg to 500 mg every 8 hours, or 500 mg to 875 mg every 12 hours, depending on the severity and type of infection. Not the primary formulation for adults.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function. Usually similar to adult dosage with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required for patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl <30 ml/min). For example, 250 mg every 12-24 hours.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Administer orally with a measuring spoon or oral syringe provided. Can be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Amoxicillin is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion).
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract, especially when taken with or without food. Bioavailability is approximately 70-90%.
Metabolism
Limited metabolism, primarily to inactive penicilloic acid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to penicillin or any component of the formulation
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any beta-lactam antibiotic
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect, requiring INR monitoring.
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs amoxicillin blood levels.
Allopurinol
Increased risk of skin rash.
Methotrexate
Decreased renal clearance of methotrexate, potentially increasing toxicity.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Store reconstituted suspension in a refrigerator (2-8°C). Do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and disturbances of fluid and electrolyte balance. In rare cases, crystalluria and renal failure have been reported. Treatment is symptomatic and supportive, with forced diuresis or hemodialysis if severe.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when clearly needed. Small amounts are excreted in breast milk; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential adverse effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).

Doctor Notes
- Emphasize adherence to the full course of treatment to prevent resistance.
- Advise patients about potential allergic reactions and when to seek immediate medical attention.
- Consider renal function, especially in pediatric and elderly patients, for dosage adjustment.

- Complete the full course of antibiotics, even if symptoms improve.
- Do not save medication for future infections.
- Consult a doctor if allergic reactions occur.
