Description
Overview of the medicine
Ventoxen contains Salbutamol, a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist, used to relieve bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose is 2-4 mg, 3-4 times daily.
Elderly
Similar to adult dose, with careful monitoring, especially for cardiovascular effects.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary in patients with severe renal impairment. Consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally with water, with or without food. Follow your doctor's instructions.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. This helps to open the airways and improve breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically within 15-30 minutes after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the urine, both as unchanged drug and as metabolites.
Half life
Plasma half-life of 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any excipient of the formulation.
- •Cardiomyopathy, severe tachycardia, or unstable angina.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics (e.g., furosemide) may exacerbate hypokalemia, particularly at higher doses.
MAOIs/TCAs
Use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) may potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol, such as tachycardia and hypertension.
Beta-blockers
Non-selective beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol) may antagonize the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and can precipitate severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation such as tachycardia, tremor, headache, and hypokalemia. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including monitoring serum potassium levels and cardiovascular function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy and lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor before use.
