Description
Overview of the medicine
Ventus is a short-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist (SABA) used for the rapid relief of bronchospasm in conditions like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 1-2 puffs (100-200 mcg) as needed for symptom relief; usually not more than 4 times a day.
Elderly
Similar to adult dosage, but caution should be exercised in elderly patients with co-morbidities, especially cardiovascular conditions.
Renal_impairment
No dose adjustment is generally required for inhaled Salbutamol in renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer by oral inhalation. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Inhale slowly and deeply through the mouth while pressing down on the canister.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta2-adrenergic receptors primarily located in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the smooth muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mast cell mediators.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes
Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
3.8-5 hours (systemic)
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the lungs after inhalation, with some systemic absorption from the GI tract.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver by conjugation to an inactive sulfate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the formulation
- Patients with tachyarrhythmia
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
May increase digoxin levels.
Diuretics
May worsen hypokalemia.
MAOIs/TCAs
Increased risk of cardiovascular effects.
Beta-blockers
May antagonize the effects of Ventus.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from direct sunlight and frost. Do not puncture or incinerate the canister.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremor, headache, hypokalemia, and metabolic acidosis. Treatment is supportive, potentially involving a cardioselective beta-blocker with extreme caution.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk, use with caution during lactation.
