Description
Overview of the medicine
Viodin 1% w/v Mouthwash is an antiseptic solution used for oral hygiene and to treat or prevent minor infections of the mouth and throat. It helps kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Gargle or rinse with 10-15 ml for 30 seconds, 2-4 times daily. Do not swallow.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required; same as adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for topical use. Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment due to potential systemic absorption.
How to Take
Rinse mouth or gargle with the undiluted solution. After use, spit out the solution. Do not swallow. For external oral use only.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine releases free iodine when in contact with the oral mucosa. Free iodine rapidly oxidizes microbial cellular components, leading to their destruction. It has broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within seconds to minutes) for local antiseptic action.
Excretion
Mainly renal if systemically absorbed.
Half life
Not clinically significant for local action. Systemic half-life of absorbed iodine is variable.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact oral mucosa. Absorption may increase with prolonged use or damaged mucosa.
Metabolism
Not relevant for local action. Systemically absorbed iodine is metabolized similar to dietary iodine.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to iodine or any other component of the formulation.
- Thyroid disorders (e.g., hyperthyroidism, goitre), especially for prolonged use.
- Prior to or after radio-iodine therapy.
- In young children (especially neonates and infants).
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concurrent use may result in an additive hypothyroid effect.
Other oral antiseptics
May reduce the efficacy of other products or cause local reactions.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Accidental ingestion may lead to gastrointestinal irritation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Large amounts may lead to systemic iodine toxicity (e.g., thyroid dysfunction, metabolic acidosis). Treatment is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution. Consult a doctor as iodine can be absorbed systemically and may affect fetal or infant thyroid function. Not recommended for routine use.
