Description
Overview of the medicine
Viodin 5% w/w Ointment is a topical antiseptic used for preventing and treating skin infections in minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount to the affected area 1-3 times daily, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required. Use with caution in patients with thyroid disorders.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for topical use. Monitor for systemic iodine absorption if applied to large areas of damaged skin.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean the affected area, then apply a thin layer of ointment. May be covered with a sterile dressing if needed.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine is a broad-spectrum antiseptic. It works by releasing iodine, which oxidizes microbial cellular components and disrupts their structure, leading to cell death. It is effective against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within 15-30 seconds of application.
Excretion
Excreted primarily via the kidneys as iodide.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption. Systemically absorbed iodine has a short half-life, but excretion is rapid.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Increased absorption may occur with large areas of application or damaged skin.
Metabolism
Systemically absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver, primarily by conversion to iodide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
- Patients with thyroid disorders (hyperthyroidism, goiter)
- Pregnant and lactating women (large areas/prolonged use)
- Newborns and infants (due to risk of hypothyroidism)
Drug Interactions
Lithium
Concurrent use may increase the risk of hypothyroidism.
Other antiseptics (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, octenidine)
May reduce the efficacy of Povidone-iodine or cause adverse reactions.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with topical application. In case of accidental ingestion or excessive application over large, damaged areas, symptoms may include gastrointestinal irritation, metabolic acidosis, and renal impairment. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Generally not recommended for extensive or prolonged use during pregnancy and lactation due to potential systemic iodine absorption and thyroid effects in the fetus/infant. Consult a doctor for use in small areas for short durations.
