Description
Overview of the medicine
Viodin-10-W Solution is an antiseptic and disinfectant containing Povidone-Iodine 10% w/v. It is used for preventing and treating infections in wounds, cuts, scrapes, and burns. It is also used for pre-operative skin preparation and general skin disinfection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply undiluted Viodin-10-W Solution directly to the affected area, or use as directed by a healthcare professional. May be used as a wet compress or surgical scrub.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients. Use as for adults.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment required for renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal with topical use. However, prolonged use on large areas should be monitored.
How to Take
For external use only. Clean the affected area, then apply the solution with a swab or directly. Do not cover with occlusive dressing unless advised by a doctor. Allow to dry.
Mechanism of Action
Povidone-iodine works by slowly releasing free iodine, which is highly reactive and has a broad spectrum of microbicidal activity. It oxidizes microbial cellular components, leading to cell death. It is effective against bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and spores.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within 15-30 seconds.
Excretion
Mainly excreted by the kidneys.
Half life
Not well-defined for topical application; systemically absorbed iodine has a half-life of several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption through intact skin. Absorption may increase from large broken skin areas or mucous membranes.
Metabolism
Absorbed iodine is metabolized in the liver and thyroid.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to iodine or povidone
- Hyperthyroidism or other thyroid diseases
- Before and after radio-iodine therapy
- Newborns and infants (due to risk of systemic absorption and thyroid dysfunction)
- Large open wounds or severely burned skin (risk of systemic absorption)
Drug Interactions
Octenidine
Concurrent use may cause transient dark discoloration.
Hydrogen peroxide
Antiseptic effects may be mutually reduced.
Silver sulfadiazine
May reduce the efficacy of both products.
Mercury-containing compounds
May form caustic mercury iodide.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C. Protect from light. Keep bottle tightly closed.
Overdose
Systemic overdose is unlikely with proper topical use. In case of accidental ingestion, seek immediate medical attention. Symptoms of overdose may include gastrointestinal irritation, metabolic acidosis, renal dysfunction, and thyroid dysfunction.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use with caution during pregnancy and lactation. Consult a doctor, especially if prolonged use or application to large areas is necessary, due to potential systemic absorption of iodine and effects on fetal/infant thyroid function.
