Description
Overview of the medicine
Albendazole is an anthelmintic medication used to treat a variety of parasitic worm infestations in humans.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For common intestinal worms (e.g., Ascaris, hookworm, pinworm, whipworm): 10 ml (400 mg) as a single dose. For Strongyloidiasis or Taeniasis: 10 ml (400 mg) once daily for 3 days. For other specific infestations, follow doctor's advice.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, but use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment. Dosage should be determined by a healthcare professional based on individual condition.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required for patients with renal impairment, but caution is advised in severe cases.
Hepatic_impairment
Use with caution. As albendazole is extensively metabolized in the liver, reduced doses or extended dosing intervals may be necessary. Liver function should be monitored.
How to Take
Shake the bottle well before each use. Can be taken with or without food. For better absorption, especially in tissue infections, it is recommended to take it with a fatty meal.
Mechanism of Action
Albendazole binds to beta-tubulin, inhibiting microtubule polymerization in parasitic worms. This impairs glucose uptake and leads to the immobilization and death of the worms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Variable, generally within 24-48 hours for intestinal worms. Effects on tissue-dwelling parasites may take longer.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via urine as metabolites (<1% as unchanged drug); some excretion in bile.
Half life
Albendazole sulfoxide (active metabolite): 8-12 hours.
Absorption
Poorly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (<5%). Absorption is significantly increased when taken with a fatty meal.
Metabolism
Rapidly and extensively metabolized in the liver to its primary active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to albendazole or other benzimidazole derivatives
- •Pregnancy (especially first trimester) and women planning pregnancy
- •Children under 6 years for neurocysticercosis (due to potential risk of retinal damage, though specific for higher doses)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
Albendazole may cause a slight increase in plasma concentrations of theophylline; monitor theophylline levels if co-administered.
Praziquantel, Dexamethasone, Cimetidine
May increase plasma concentrations of albendazole sulfoxide, potentially enhancing its therapeutic effects but also increasing side effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken. Gastric lavage and activated charcoal may be considered if ingestion was recent. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Contraindicated, especially in the first trimester. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment and for at least one month after the last dose. Lactation: Albendazole and its metabolites are excreted in breast milk. Caution is advised; consult a doctor before use during breastfeeding.
