Xbac 250 mg Suspension is a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg once daily for 3 days, or 500 mg on day 1 followed by 250 mg for 4 days. For certain STDs, a single 1g dose. For suspension, dosage is typically weight-based in pediatric patients, or for adults unable to swallow tablets, as prescribed.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required unless severe renal/hepatic impairment. Monitor renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed for mild to moderate renal impairment. Caution in severe impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake well before use. Use a measuring spoon or oral syringe for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Azithromycin binds to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby inhibiting protein synthesis. This results in bacteriostatic effects, but can be bactericidal at high concentrations or against highly susceptible organisms.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to azithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide or ketolide antibiotic
- •History of cholestatic jaundice/hepatic dysfunction associated with prior azithromycin use
Drug Interactions
Digoxin
Increased digoxin levels; monitor digoxin levels.
Antacids
May decrease peak plasma levels of azithromycin; administer azithromycin at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after antacids.
Warfarin
Increased anticoagulant effect; monitor PT/INR closely.
Nelfinavir
Increased azithromycin concentrations.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Store reconstituted suspension at 2°C-30°C and discard after 5-10 days (check specific label for exact duration).
Overdose
Symptoms include severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and reversible hearing loss. Management involves gastric lavage, supportive care, and symptomatic treatment. Hemodialysis is not effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk; use with caution.
