Description
Overview of the medicine
Cetirizine is a second-generation antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of allergic conditions such as hay fever, conjunctivitis, eczema, and urticaria. It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
5-10 mg once daily.
Elderly
5 mg once daily, adjust for renal function.
Renal_impairment
CrCl 31-60 mL/min: 5 mg every 2 days; CrCl 11-30 mL/min: 5 mg every 3 days. Contraindicated in end-stage renal disease (CrCl < 10 mL/min).
How to Take
Take orally with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Cetirizine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It prevents the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators from mast cells.

Primarily excreted unchanged in urine.

Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cetirizine, hydroxyzine, or any piperazine derivatives
- •End-stage renal disease (CrCl < 10 mL/min)
Drug Interactions
Theophylline
May decrease cetirizine clearance (minimal clinical significance).
CNS depressants (e.g., alcohol, sedatives)
May enhance CNS depressant effects.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms may include drowsiness, tachycardia, tremor. Management is supportive and symptomatic; no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk, caution advised during lactation.
