Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 10 years or weighing more than 50 kg: 200-400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment needed unless renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Adjust dose based on creatinine clearance (e.g., if CrCl < 60 mL/min, reduce dose).
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. For suspension, reconstitute with boiled and cooled water.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs).

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations reached within 2-6 hours.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion (50% in urine) and biliary/fecal excretion.

Warfarin

Carbamazepine
Cefixime may increase carbamazepine levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep reconstituted suspension in refrigerator.
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis are not effective. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is advised.
