Description
Overview of the medicine
Antif-500-mg-capsule is an antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usually 500 mg once daily or 250 mg twice daily, depending on the severity and type of infection. Treatment duration typically 7-14 days.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is required for elderly patients with normal renal function. For impaired renal function, dosage should be adjusted as per guidelines.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance 30-50 mL/min: 250 mg once daily. For creatinine clearance <30 mL/min: 250 mg every 48 hours.
How to Take
Take the capsule orally with a full glass of water, with or without food. Do not chew or crush the capsule. It is important to complete the full course of treatment as prescribed by your doctor.
Mechanism of Action
Antifloxacin, a synthetic broad-spectrum antibacterial agent, inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 1-2 hours after oral dose.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in the urine, with a smaller portion excreted in the feces.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration, with peak plasma concentrations occurring within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver to less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to antifloxacin or other quinolones.
- •History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with quinolone use.
- •Children and adolescents (<18 years of age) due to potential for cartilage damage.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effect, leading to increased risk of bleeding. Monitor INR closely.
Corticosteroids
Increased risk of tendinitis and tendon rupture.
Iron and Zinc supplements
Reduced absorption of antifloxacin. Administer antifloxacin several hours apart.
Antacids (containing aluminum, magnesium, calcium)
Reduced absorption of antifloxacin. Take antifloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage and symptomatic supportive treatment are recommended. Adequate hydration should be maintained. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing antifloxacin.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Antifloxacin should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is excreted in human milk; therefore, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
