Description
Overview of the medicine
Arixon 250 mg Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the third-generation cephalosporin class. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical adult dosage is 1-2 grams once daily, administered intravenously (IV) or intramuscularly (IM), depending on the severity of the infection. For severe infections, up to 4 grams daily may be given.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is typically required for elderly patients with normal renal and hepatic function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with significant renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 10 mL/min), a reduction in dosage may be considered, but generally, dosage adjustment is not required due to compensatory biliary excretion.
How to Take
Arixon Injection can be administered via deep intramuscular injection or slow intravenous injection (over 2-4 minutes) or intravenous infusion (over 30 minutes). Reconstitute with appropriate diluent (e.g., Lidocaine for IM, Sterile Water for IV).
Mechanism of Action
Arixon inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes after IV administration.
Excretion
Approximately 50-60% via renal excretion and 40-50% via biliary/fecal excretion as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 6-9 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly and completely absorbed after intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily undergoes hydrolysis to inactive metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Arixon, other cephalosporins, or any component of the formulation.
- Neonates (especially premature) with hyperbilirubinemia, due to the risk of bilirubin encephalopathy.
- Concomitant intravenous calcium-containing solutions in neonates (less than 28 days of age).
Drug Interactions
Aminoglycosides
May have synergistic antibacterial activity; monitor renal function if co-administered.
Calcium-containing Solutions
Precipitation risk, especially in neonates; avoid concomitant administration through the same IV line.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR/PT closely.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately or within 6 hours if stored at room temperature, or within 24 hours if refrigerated.
Overdose
In case of overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment should be initiated. There is no specific antidote. Arixon is not effectively removed by peritoneal dialysis or hemodialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Arixon is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.

YesClinical Trials
Arixon (based on Ceftriaxone) has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety in various bacterial infections. Ongoing post-marketing surveillance continues to monitor its long-term effects and rare adverse events.
Lab Monitoring
- Complete Blood Count (CBC) with differential, especially during prolonged therapy.
- Liver function tests (ALT, AST, ALP, bilirubin).
- Renal function tests (creatinine, BUN) in patients with pre-existing renal impairment.
- Coagulation parameters (PT/INR) in patients receiving concomitant anticoagulants.
Doctor Notes
- Ensure patient history of allergies to cephalosporins or penicillins is thoroughly reviewed before administration.
- Administer IV doses slowly (over 2-4 minutes) to minimize the risk of irritation or vein pain.
- Monitor renal and hepatic function, especially in patients with pre-existing impairment or those on prolonged therapy.
- Caution should be exercised when co-administering with calcium-containing solutions, especially in neonates, due to precipitation risk.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve, to prevent resistance.
- Report any severe or persistent side effects to your doctor immediately.
- Inform your doctor about all other medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking.
- Do not share this medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
