Description
Overview of the medicine
Axim 125 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It belongs to the cephalosporin class of antibiotics and works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Not typically used for adults in 125mg suspension. Adult dosage for other forms is usually 250-500mg twice daily.
Elderly
Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required; interval may need to be extended.
How to Take
Oral administration. Shake well before use. Can be taken with food to enhance absorption and reduce gastrointestinal upset. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime axetil is a prodrug that is hydrolyzed to cefuroxime in the body. Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This leads to osmotic instability and bacterial cell lysis.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1 hour.
Excretion
Mainly excreted unchanged by the kidneys via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Approximately 1.2 to 1.5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract after oral administration and rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Food enhances absorption.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized; the axetil moiety is hydrolyzed in the intestinal mucosa and blood.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporin antibiotics
- History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylaxis) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems, monobactams)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases cefuroxime concentrations and prolongs its effects.
Oral anticoagulants
May increase INR and risk of bleeding; monitor coagulation parameters.
Oral contraceptives
May reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives; use alternative birth control.
Antacids/H2 blockers/PPIs
May decrease the bioavailability of cefuroxime axetil; administer at least an hour before or after.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Once reconstituted, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and discard after 7-10 days.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include convulsions, encephalopathy, and other neurological sequelae. Treatment is largely supportive. Hemodialysis can be used to remove cefuroxime from the system.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus. Use during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor the infant for gastrointestinal disturbances or candidiasis.
