Overview of the medicine
Fexofenadine is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis and chronic idiopathic urticaria: 60 mg twice daily. Alternatively, 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is generally recommended for elderly patients with normal renal function. Use with caution in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance < 80 mL/min), the recommended initial dose is 60 mg once daily.
How to Take
Take Axodin 60 mg tablet orally with water, preferably before a meal. Do not take with fruit juices (e.g., grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce bioavailability.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine selectively antagonizes peripheral H1-histamine receptors, thereby inhibiting the effects of histamine and alleviating allergic symptoms without significant central nervous system effects.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action typically occurs within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in the feces (approximately 80%) and urine (approximately 11%) as unchanged drug.
Half life
The elimination half-life is approximately 11-15 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed following oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are achieved in approximately 1-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to fexofenadine hydrochloride or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin and Ketoconazole
Can increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations, but this increase is generally not considered clinically significant.
Antacids containing aluminum and magnesium
May reduce the absorption of fexofenadine. It is recommended to separate administration by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, dizziness, and dry mouth. Management should be symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use in pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Fexofenadine is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
