Description
Overview of the medicine
Azmasol-25-mg Respirator Solution contains salbutamol, a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It is used for the quick relief of bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). It is administered via a nebulizer.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose for nebulization is 2.5 mg to 5 mg of salbutamol diluted in normal saline, administered 3-4 times daily. The specific dilution and frequency for Azmasol-25-mg solution will be determined by the physician based on the product's concentration.
Elderly
No special dose adjustment is usually required, but caution is advised in patients with concomitant cardiovascular disease.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment is generally required, but monitor for adverse effects with prolonged or high-dose therapy.
How to Take
This solution is for inhalation only, administered via a suitable nebulizer machine. It should not be injected or ingested. Follow the dilution instructions provided by your physician or pharmacist.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to the relaxation of smooth muscle and bronchodilation. This action helps to widen the airways and facilitate breathing.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes after inhalation.
Excretion
Primarily via urine, with about 70% excreted within 24 hours as unchanged drug and metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 4-6 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed into systemic circulation after inhalation. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 2-4 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive sulfate conjugates. Not extensively metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any of its excipients
- Cardiac arrhythmias associated with tachycardia
- Threatened abortion (oral salbutamol preparations are contraindicated)
Drug Interactions
Diuretics
Concomitant use with potassium-depleting diuretics (e.g., loop or thiazide diuretics) may increase the risk of hypokalemia, especially with high doses of salbutamol.
Beta-blockers
May antagonize the bronchodilatory effects of salbutamol and can precipitate severe bronchospasm in asthmatic patients. Non-selective beta-blockers should generally be avoided.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Concurrent administration may potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol; use with extreme caution.
Storage
Store below 30°C (86°F). Protect from light. Do not freeze. Keep the ampoules/vial in the outer carton to protect from light. Discard any opened or diluted solution after 24 hours.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include excessive beta-adrenergic stimulation such as tachycardia, tremors, headache, palpitations, arrhythmias, and metabolic changes like hypokalemia and lactic acidosis. Treatment involves symptomatic and supportive care, monitoring potassium levels, and cardiac function.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol is excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.

YesClinical Trials
Salbutamol has been extensively studied in numerous clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety for the treatment of bronchospasm in asthma and COPD patients across various age groups. Ongoing research explores optimized delivery methods and combination therapies.
Lab Monitoring
- Serum potassium levels should be monitored, especially in patients receiving high doses, or concomitant therapy with diuretics, corticosteroids, or xanthines, due to the risk of hypokalemia.
Doctor Notes
- Emphasize proper patient education on the use of nebulizers and the difference between reliever and controller medications.
- Assess cardiovascular status, especially in elderly patients or those with pre-existing heart conditions, before initiating and during therapy.
- Be vigilant for paradoxical bronchospasm; if it occurs, discontinue the drug immediately and institute alternative therapy.
- Advise patients to report any worsening of asthma symptoms or decreased response to treatment.
Patient Guidelines
- Use this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not change your dose or frequency without consulting your doctor.
- Ensure proper nebulizer technique for effective delivery of the medicine.
- Seek immediate medical attention if your breathing difficulties worsen or if the usual dose does not provide relief.
- Do not use this medicine for prolonged periods without medical advice.
Missed Dose Advice
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Salbutamol generally does not affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. However, if you experience side effects like dizziness, tremor, or palpitations, avoid driving or engaging in activities requiring alertness until these effects subside.
Lifestyle Advice
- Avoid exposure to known asthma triggers such as smoke, pollen, dust mites, and pet dander.
- Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, as advised by your healthcare provider.
- Quit smoking if you are a smoker, as smoking significantly worsens respiratory conditions.
