Description
Overview of the medicine
Azmasol 5 mg Respirator Solution contains Salbutamol, a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist. It is used for the treatment and prevention of bronchospasm in patients with reversible obstructive airway disease, such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
2.5 mg or 5 mg via nebulizer, 3-4 times daily as needed. For severe cases, higher doses may be used under medical supervision.
Elderly
Similar to adult dose, monitor for adverse effects.
Renal_impairment
No specific dosage adjustment recommended, but use with caution.
How to Take
Administer by nebulization. The solution should not be injected or swallowed. Dilution may be required as per physician's instruction.
Mechanism of Action
Salbutamol selectively stimulates beta-2 adrenergic receptors in the bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the muscle and bronchodilation. It also inhibits the release of mediators from mast cells in the airway.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
5-15 minutes after inhalation.
Excretion
Primarily excreted in urine as unchanged drug and its metabolite.
Half life
Approximately 2.7 to 5 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after inhalation. Systemic bioavailability is about 10-20% for inhaled doses.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to an inactive sulfate conjugate.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to salbutamol or any component of the solution.
- Severe allergic reactions to other sympathomimetics.
Drug Interactions
Diuretics (e.g., Furosemide)
May potentiate hypokalemia when co-administered with salbutamol.
Beta-blockers (e.g., Propranolol)
Can inhibit the bronchodilatory effect of salbutamol and may cause severe bronchospasm.
MAO Inhibitors & Tricyclic Antidepressants
May potentiate the cardiovascular effects of salbutamol.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms include tachycardia, tremor, headache, palpitations, and hypokalemia. Management involves symptomatic and supportive therapy, and careful monitoring of cardiac status and potassium levels.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Salbutamol may be excreted in breast milk; use with caution in nursing mothers.
