Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceclav is a combination antibiotic containing Cefixime (a third-generation cephalosporin) and Clavulanic Acid (a beta-lactamase inhibitor). It is used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Usual adult dose: Cefixime 200-400 mg once daily or in two divided doses for 7-14 days, combined with Clavulanic Acid 125 mg. Follow doctor's advice.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment not generally required in elderly with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment required in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min).
How to Take
Ceclav can be taken with or without food. To minimize potential gastrointestinal upset, it may be taken with food. Complete the full course of treatment as prescribed.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. Clavulanic Acid inactivates a wide range of beta-lactamase enzymes produced by bacteria, thereby protecting Cefixime from degradation and extending its antibacterial spectrum.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Cefixime is primarily excreted renally. Clavulanic Acid is primarily excreted renally.
Half life
Cefixime: 3-4 hours; Clavulanic Acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Cefixime is absorbed orally, Clavulanic Acid is also well absorbed. Food has minimal effect on absorption.
Metabolism
Cefixime is not extensively metabolized. Clavulanic Acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to Cefixime, Clavulanic Acid, other cephalosporins, or penicillin.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any beta-lactam antibiotic.
Drug Interactions

Oral Contraceptives
May decrease effectiveness; advise additional contraception.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
