Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefim-3 100 mg Suspension is an antibiotic medication containing Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin, used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 200-400 mg daily in single or two divided doses. For suspension, dosage needs to be calculated based on weight or prescribed by a doctor.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment; otherwise, similar to adults.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance <60 mL/min, dosage adjustment is required (e.g., 200 mg once daily for CrCl 21-59 mL/min, 100 mg once daily for CrCl <20 mL/min).
How to Take
Administer orally with or without food. Shake the suspension well before use. Use a calibrated measuring device.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Usually within 1-2 hours
Excretion
Mainly renal excretion via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion (about 50%), some via biliary/fecal route.
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay absorption but does not significantly affect extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or other cephalosporins
- •History of anaphylaxis to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time (PT) and international normalized ratio (INR), increasing bleeding risk.
Carbamazepine
Increased carbamazepine levels have been reported with concomitant cefixime use.
Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (though clinical significance is debatable, advise additional barrier method).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C in a dry place, away from light. Reconstituted suspension should be stored in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and not frozen.
Overdose
Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rarely, seizures. Treatment is supportive; hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not substantially effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
