Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefim-3 25 mg Pediatric Drop contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, used to treat various bacterial infections in children.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults generally use Cefixime tablets or capsules. Typical adult dose is 400 mg orally once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours. This pediatric drop formulation is not intended for adult use.
Elderly
Elderly patients generally use Cefixime tablets or capsules. Dosage may need adjustment based on renal function. This pediatric drop formulation is not intended for elderly use.
Renal_impairment
For children with creatinine clearance <60 mL/min, dosage adjustment is necessary. A reduced dose or extended dosing interval may be required.
How to Take
Administer orally, with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided calibrated dropper to measure the exact dose. Discard any unused portion after the specified period (e.g., 7-14 days after reconstitution).
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to the inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis, which causes cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in urine (about 50%) and bile.
Half life
Average half-life of 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 30-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly delays absorption but does not significantly affect the extent.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body. About 10% of the absorbed dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- •History of anaphylaxis to penicillin
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase cefixime plasma concentrations by decreasing renal excretion.
Carbamazepine
Elevated carbamazepine levels have been reported with concurrent cefixime use.
Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
Increased prothrombin time (PT) with or without bleeding. Monitor INR/PT closely.
Storage
Store the dry powder below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. After reconstitution, store in a refrigerator (2-8°C) and do not freeze. Discard after 7-14 days (check specific product leaflet).
Overdose
No specific antidote. Management involves symptomatic and supportive care. Gastric lavage may be considered in acute overdose. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing cefixime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
