Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefobac 750 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime Sodium, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections in various parts of the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose is 750 mg every 8 hours by intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) injection. For severe infections, the dose may be increased to 1.5 g every 8 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose reduction is required unless there is significant renal impairment. Dosage should be adjusted based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance. For example, in severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <10 mL/min), 750 mg once daily or every 24 hours.
How to Take
Cefobac injection can be given by deep intramuscular injection, or by slow intravenous injection over 3-5 minutes, or by intravenous infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) inside the bacterial cell. This binding leads to the disruption of the cell wall, resulting in bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid (within minutes for IV, 30-60 minutes for IM).
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys, through glomerular filtration and tubular secretion. Approximately 50% to 70% of a dose is recovered in the urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) injection. Peak plasma concentrations are reached within 30-60 minutes. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate systemic availability.
Metabolism
Not significantly metabolized in the body. It is excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, any other cephalosporin antibiotics, or to any of the excipients.
- •History of severe hypersensitivity (e.g., anaphylactic reaction) to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agents (e.g., penicillins, monobactams and carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration of probenecid increases and prolongs serum cefuroxime concentrations.
Oral anticoagulants
May potentiate the anticoagulant effect, leading to an increased INR.
Nephrotoxic drugs (e.g., aminoglycosides)
Concurrent use with nephrotoxic drugs may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Storage
Store dry powder vials below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Refer to specific instructions for storage of reconstituted solution.
Overdose
Overdose of cephalosporins can cause cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Management is primarily symptomatic and supportive. Hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis may be useful in removing cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Cefuroxime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Cefuroxime is excreted in human milk in small quantities; caution should be exercised when Cefuroxime is administered to a nursing woman.
