Description
Overview of the medicine
Cerox-CV 125 mg Tablet is an antibiotic medication combining Cefuroxime Axetil, a second-generation cephalosporin, and Clavulanic Acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, especially in pediatric patients.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically used for pediatric patients. For adults, usually higher strength formulations (e.g., Cefuroxime 250mg or 500mg) are prescribed.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be required based on renal function, if higher strength is prescribed.
Pediatric
Children (2 years and older): 125 mg Cefuroxime (as in this tablet) twice daily, or as directed by physician, depending on infection type and severity. For children under 2 years, specific weight-based dosing is required, consult physician.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is necessary in patients with significant renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min) for appropriate strength.
How to Take
Take the tablet orally with food. Do not chew or crush the tablet, swallow it whole.
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Clavulanic acid is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that prevents bacterial enzymes (beta-lactamases) from inactivating cefuroxime, thus extending its spectrum of activity against beta-lactamase-producing bacteria.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours for antibacterial action.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged by the kidneys (both cefuroxime and clavulanic acid), via glomerular filtration and tubular secretion.
Half life
Cefuroxime: approximately 1.2-1.5 hours; Clavulanic acid: approximately 1 hour.
Absorption
Cefuroxime axetil is absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and rapidly hydrolyzed to cefuroxime. Absorption is enhanced with food. Clavulanic acid is also well absorbed orally.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not significantly metabolized in the liver; Clavulanic acid is extensively metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, clavulanic acid, or any other cephalosporin antibiotics
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other beta-lactam antibiotic (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems)
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Increases and prolongs cefuroxime plasma levels.
Oral Contraceptives
Reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives (use additional non-hormonal contraception).
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May prolong prothrombin time (INR); monitor closely.
Storage
Store in a cool and dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) and convulsions. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis can reduce serum levels of both components.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Category B for pregnancy (no evidence of harm in animal studies, but limited human data). Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Both cefuroxime and clavulanic acid are excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in breastfeeding mothers. Consult a doctor.
