Description
Overview of the medicine
Ceroxime 750 mg Injection contains Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical dose is 750 mg to 1.5 g every 8 hours, administered intramuscularly (IM) or intravenously (IV). In severe infections, dose may be increased to 1.5 g every 6 hours. For surgical prophylaxis, 1.5 g IV at induction of anesthesia, followed by 750 mg IM/IV every 8 hours for up to 24-48 hours.
Elderly
No special dose adjustment is required unless there is significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment is necessary based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 10-20 mL/min, 750 mg twice daily. For CrCl <10 mL/min, 750 mg once daily. Hemodialysis patients should receive an additional dose after each dialysis session.
How to Take
For intravenous administration, Ceroxime 750 mg can be given slowly over 3 to 5 minutes or infused over 30 to 60 minutes. For intramuscular administration, reconstitute with sterile water for injection and inject deep into a large muscle mass (e.g., gluteus maximus or lateral thigh).
Mechanism of Action
Cefuroxime is a bactericidal agent that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It has a high affinity for penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid, typically within minutes after intravenous administration.
Excretion
Excreted unchanged primarily by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion in the urine. About 89% of an intravenous dose is recovered in the urine within 24 hours.
Half life
Approximately 1.0 to 1.5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after intramuscular (IM) injection and peak plasma concentrations are achieved within 30-60 minutes. Intravenous (IV) administration provides immediate systemic availability.
Metabolism
Cefuroxime is not metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefuroxime, any other cephalosporin antibiotics, or any of the excipients.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to any other type of beta-lactam antibacterial agent (e.g., penicillins, carbapenems).
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
Concomitant administration of probenecid increases the area under the serum concentration versus time curve by 50%.
Loop Diuretics
High doses of loop diuretics may enhance nephrotoxicity when given with cephalosporins.
Aminoglycosides
May increase the risk of nephrotoxicity when administered concomitantly.
Oral Anticoagulants
Concomitant use with oral anticoagulants may increase the INR (International Normalised Ratio).
Storage
Store dry powder vials below 30°C, protected from light. Reconstituted solutions should be used immediately or stored as per manufacturer's instructions (e.g., up to 24 hours at room temperature or 48 hours in a refrigerator).
Overdose
Overdose symptoms include cerebral irritation leading to convulsions. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may aid in removal of cefuroxime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Cefuroxime is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). Use should be considered if clearly needed. It is excreted in small amounts in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administering to a nursing mother.

YesClinical Trials
Cefuroxime has undergone extensive clinical trials demonstrating its efficacy and safety in treating a wide range of bacterial infections across various patient populations since its introduction.
Lab Monitoring
- Renal function tests (especially in patients with pre-existing renal impairment or on prolonged high-dose therapy)
- Complete blood count (CBC) if treatment is prolonged
- Liver function tests if clinically indicated
Doctor Notes
- Always inquire about patient's allergy history, especially to beta-lactam antibiotics.
- Monitor renal function in elderly patients or those with pre-existing kidney disease.
- Administer IV slowly to avoid vein irritation.
- Consider culture and sensitivity testing for optimal treatment, especially in severe or recurrent infections.
Patient Guidelines
- Complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed, even if symptoms improve.
- Report any severe side effects immediately to your doctor or nurse.
- Inform healthcare professionals about any known allergies, especially to penicillin or cephalosporins.
Missed Dose Advice
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Driving Precautions
Cefuroxime may cause dizziness, which could affect the ability to drive or operate machinery. Patients should be advised to exercise caution.
Lifestyle Advice
- Maintain good hygiene to prevent further infections.
- Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
