Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin 0.3% Eye Drops are an ophthalmic solution containing ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as conjunctivitis, corneal ulcers, and blepharitis, caused by susceptible microorganisms.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Bacterial Conjunctivitis: 1-2 drops into the affected eye(s) 4-6 times daily for 7-14 days. Corneal Ulcers: Initially, 2 drops into the affected eye(s) every 15 minutes for 6 hours, then 2 drops every 30 minutes for the remainder of the first day. On the second day, 2 drops every hour. From day 3-14, 2 drops every 4 hours. Treatment may continue beyond 14 days if needed.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
Not applicable for topical ophthalmic use due to negligible systemic absorption.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pouch, instill the prescribed number of drops, and close eye gently. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin, a fluoroquinolone, exerts its bactericidal action by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Ophthalmic effects typically begin rapidly after administration.
Excretion
Any systemically absorbed ciprofloxacin is primarily excreted unchanged in the urine. Locally, it is washed out by tears.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 3-5 hours, but topical ophthalmic half-life is not clinically significant due to minimal systemic exposure.
Absorption
Systemic absorption following topical ophthalmic administration is minimal. Low concentrations can be detected in the aqueous humor.
Metabolism
Minimal metabolism occurs after ophthalmic administration due to limited systemic absorption.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone
- Hypersensitivity to any excipient in the formulation
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to avoid washing out the first medication.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place, away from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. If accidental ingestion occurs, symptomatic and supportive measures should be taken.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy: Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Lactation: It is unknown whether ophthalmic ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk. Caution is advised when administered to a nursing woman.
