Description
Overview of the medicine
Ciprofloxacin 0.3% Eye Ointment is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, including conjunctivitis and corneal ulcers.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For bacterial conjunctivitis: Apply a small ribbon (approx. 1/2 inch) into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7-10 days. For corneal ulcers: Apply a small ribbon every 1-2 hours initially, then decrease frequency.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment needed as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Wash hands before and after application. Pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket and apply a thin strip of ointment. Avoid touching the eye or eyelid with the tip of the tube.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes necessary for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Antibacterial effect typically observed within a few hours of administration.
Excretion
Any systemically absorbed ciprofloxacin is primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys. Locally, it is cleared from the ocular surface and tissues.
Half life
Systemic half-life (if measurable) is 3-5 hours, but topical ophthalmic half-life in ocular tissues is short.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after topical ocular administration. Local absorption into ocular tissues (cornea, conjunctiva, aqueous humor).
Metabolism
Minimal systemic metabolism for ophthalmic application; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or any other fluoroquinolone
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the formulation
Drug Interactions
Other ophthalmic preparations
If using other eye drops or ointments, wait at least 5-10 minutes between applications to prevent washout.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C), away from moisture and light. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental overdose with ophthalmic ciprofloxacin is unlikely. If excessive amount is applied, it can be rinsed from the eye with lukewarm water. Symptomatic treatment if accidental ingestion occurs.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in human milk after systemic administration; however, systemic absorption after ophthalmic use is minimal. Consult a doctor.
