Description
Overview of the medicine
Cipcin 250 mg Suspension is an antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin, and bones. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 250-750 mg orally twice daily, depending on the infection.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction is required for patients with severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. Do not take with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone. Shake suspension well before use. Use the measuring device provided.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
1-2 hours (peak plasma concentration)
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (50-70% as unchanged drug) and to a lesser extent via bile/feces.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver (10-20%) to less active metabolites.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Concomitant administration with tizanidine
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May enhance the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Monitor INR.
Tizanidine
Concomitant use is contraindicated due to increased tizanidine plasma concentrations, leading to hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
May increase serum theophylline levels, potentially leading to toxicity. Monitor levels.
Antacids/Calcium supplements
Reduce absorption of ciprofloxacin. Administer ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these agents.
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C. Store reconstituted suspension at room temperature (15-30°C) or refrigerated (2-8°C), protected from light, and do not freeze.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose include acute renal failure. Treatment is supportive and symptomatic; hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis may aid in removal.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted in breast milk and may cause adverse effects in the infant; discontinue nursing or the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.
