Ciprofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
The usual adult dosage varies depending on the infection. For severe or complicated infections, 750 mg orally once daily or 500 mg orally twice daily. Duration varies from 7 to 14 days, or longer if necessary.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dose adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction is required for patients with creatinine clearance ≤ 30 mL/min. Consult prescribing information for specific guidelines.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Do not take with dairy products (milk, yogurt) or calcium-fortified juices alone, as these can decrease absorption. Ensure adequate hydration.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bactericidal action.

Peak plasma concentrations are usually achieved 1-2 hours after oral administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (approximately 50-70% as unchanged drug in urine); some fecal excretion.

Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Ciprofloxacin or other fluoroquinolones.
- •Concomitant administration with Tizanidine.
- •History of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Potentiation of anticoagulant effects.
Tizanidine
Significantly increased Tizanidine exposure, contraindicated.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of Theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Antacids/Mineral supplements
Reduced Ciprofloxacin absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, protected from light and moisture.
Overdose
In case of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive care should be instituted. Gastric lavage may be considered. Maintain adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
