Overview of the medicine
Civox 200 mg Suspension contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, effective against a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and ear.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typically 200 mg-400 mg once daily or 200 mg every 12 hours, depending on the infection severity. Max 400 mg/day.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary in elderly patients with impaired renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction recommended for creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min. For CrCl 21-60 mL/min, 75% of standard dose. For CrCl < 20 mL/min, 50% of standard dose.
How to Take
Oral administration. May be taken with or without food. For suspension, shake well before use and use a measuring device. For pediatric use, consult a doctor for appropriate dosage based on body weight.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial cell lysis and death. It binds to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located inside the bacterial cell wall, which are responsible for the final stages of peptidoglycan synthesis.

Onset
Peak plasma concentrations occur 2-6 hours after administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted by the kidneys (50-60% as unchanged drug).
Half life
Approximately 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay but not significantly affect absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized; about 10% is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase anticoagulant effect, requiring close monitoring of INR.
Probenecid

Oral Contraceptives
May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives (though controversial, advisable to use alternative contraception).
Storage
Store dry powder below 30°C, away from light and moisture. Keep reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2-8°C) and discard after 7-14 days (check specific label for exact duration).
Overdose
Gastric lavage may be indicated. Cefixime is not removed in significant quantities from the circulation by hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm, but human data is limited. Use only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution during lactation.
