Overview of the medicine
Civox 500 mg Tablet is an antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone group, used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
500 mg orally twice daily for 7-14 days, depending on the infection.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment is needed unless renal function is impaired. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required based on creatinine clearance. For CrCl 30-60 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 12 hours; for CrCl <30 mL/min, 250-500 mg every 18-24 hours.
How to Take
Take the tablet whole with water, with or without food. Avoid taking with dairy products, antacids, or mineral supplements.
Mechanism of Action
Inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.

Varies by infection type and severity, generally within hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (both glomerular filtration and tubular secretion) and to a lesser extent via the feces.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours in adults with normal renal function.
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; peak plasma concentrations achieved within 1-2 hours.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to four active metabolites, but the parent drug remains predominant.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones

Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effect, monitor INR.
Tizanidine
Increased risk of hypotension and sedation.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, monitor for toxicity.
Antacids (containing Mg/Al)
Reduced absorption of ciprofloxacin. Take at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after antacids.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Limited data on overdose. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal upset, dizziness, confusion, tremor, and seizures. Management is symptomatic and supportive, including gastric lavage and activated charcoal. Maintain adequate hydration.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless benefits outweigh risks, due to potential effects on fetal cartilage development. Excreted into breast milk, not recommended for use during lactation.
