Overview of the medicine
Dextropac is an oral solution used to relieve cough and chest congestion associated with common cold, bronchitis, and other respiratory conditions. Dextromethorphan acts as a cough suppressant, while Guaifenesin acts as an expectorant, helping to thin and clear mucus from the airways.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children 12 years and older: 10 ml every 4-6 hours, not exceeding 60 ml in 24 hours.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed for elderly, follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
Use with caution; dose adjustment may be necessary in severe impairment.
How to Take
Administer orally using the provided measuring cup or spoon. May be taken with or without food.
Mechanism of Action
Dextromethorphan acts centrally on the cough reflex center in the medulla to suppress the cough. Guaifenesin works by increasing the volume and decreasing the viscosity of secretions in the trachea and bronchi, thereby facilitating the removal of phlegm.

Excretion
Mainly excreted in urine as metabolites. Small amounts excreted unchanged.

Dextromethorphan and Guaifenesin are readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract.
Metabolism
Dextromethorphan is extensively metabolized in the liver by CYP2D6. Guaifenesin is rapidly metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin, or any excipients
- •Concurrent use or within 14 days of discontinuing monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)
Drug Interactions
Alcohol and other CNS depressants
May enhance sedative effects.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Risk of serotonergic syndrome (excitation, hyperpyrexia, changes in blood pressure).
Storage
Store below 30°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness, ataxia, nystagmus, and respiratory depression. Management is supportive, including gastric lavage or activated charcoal if recent ingestion, and respiratory support if needed.
