Overview of the medicine
Ema 40 mg tablet contains Esomeprazole, a proton pump inhibitor, used to treat conditions caused by excess stomach acid, such as GERD, stomach ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
GERD: 20 mg or 40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. Erosive esophagitis: 40 mg once daily for 4-8 weeks. H. pylori eradication: 40 mg once daily with antibiotics.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment generally required, but caution is advised.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment required.
How to Take
Take the tablet whole, at least one hour before a meal. Do not crush or chew.
Mechanism of Action
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme system (the proton pump) in the gastric parietal cells.

Excretion
Mainly via urine (80%) and feces (20%).

Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Esomeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles, or any component of the formulation.
- Concomitant use with nelfinavir.

Warfarin
Increased INR/prothrombin time; monitor closely.
Nelfinavir
Significant decrease in nelfinavir exposure; contraindicated.
Clopidogrel
May reduce the antiplatelet effect of clopidogrel by inhibiting CYP2C19.
Methotrexate
May increase methotrexate levels; consider temporary discontinuation of PPI.
