Description
Overview of the medicine
Fenobac (Fexofenadine) is a non-sedating antihistamine used to relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and chronic idiopathic urticaria (hives). It works by blocking histamine H1 receptors in the body.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
For seasonal allergic rhinitis: 60 mg twice daily or 120 mg once daily or 180 mg once daily. For chronic idiopathic urticaria: 60 mg twice daily or 180 mg once daily.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is generally required for elderly patients with normal renal function.
Renal_impairment
For patients with impaired renal function (creatinine clearance ≤ 80 mL/min), a starting dose of 60 mg once daily is recommended.
How to Take
Fenobac tablets should be taken orally with water, with or without food. Avoid taking with fruit juices (grapefruit, orange, apple) as they may reduce absorption.
Mechanism of Action
Fexofenadine is a selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist. It competitively binds to and blocks the H1 receptors, thereby preventing histamine from causing allergic symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, and hives.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Onset of action is usually within 1 hour.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (80%) and urine (11%).
Half life
The mean elimination half-life is approximately 14.4 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration. Peak plasma concentrations are reached in approximately 2-3 hours.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized; approximately 5% of the dose is metabolized.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Known hypersensitivity to fexofenadine or any components of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Erythromycin
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations.
Ketoconazole
May increase fexofenadine plasma concentrations.
Aluminum and magnesium-containing antacids
May decrease fexofenadine absorption. Separate administration by approximately 2 hours.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, drowsiness, and dry mouth. In case of an overdose, symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis does not effectively remove fexofenadine from blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Fenobac should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. It is not recommended for use by nursing mothers as fexofenadine is excreted into breast milk.
