Description
Overview of the medicine
Interferon alfa-2b is a recombinant human interferon used to treat various conditions, including chronic hepatitis B and C, certain cancers, and condyloma acuminatum. It works by modulating the immune system and exhibiting antiproliferative and antiviral effects.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Varies widely by indication. E.g., for chronic hepatitis C, 3 million IU three times a week via SC/IM injection.
Elderly
Dosage adjustments may be needed due to decreased renal function; careful monitoring recommended.
Renal_impairment
Dosage reduction may be necessary in severe renal impairment.
How to Take
Administer subcutaneously or intramuscularly. Reconstitute powder for injection with sterile water for injection if applicable. Ensure proper aseptic technique.
Mechanism of Action
Binds to specific receptors on cell surfaces, initiating a complex intracellular signaling cascade that leads to the transcription of specific genes. These gene products mediate the antiviral, antiproliferative, and immunomodulatory effects of interferons.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies depending on condition, but antiviral effects can begin within hours.
Excretion
Primarily renal excretion of metabolites.
Half life
Approximately 2-4 hours after IV, 3-8 hours after IM/SC.
Absorption
High bioavailability after subcutaneous/intramuscular injection (>80%). Peak serum levels achieved within 3-12 hours.
Metabolism
Primarily renal and hepatic catabolism, filtered and reabsorbed by the kidney.
