Description
Overview of the medicine
Ketromin 0.5% Eye Drop is a broad-spectrum ophthalmic antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections of the eye. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days, or as directed by physician.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for renal impairment, as systemic absorption is minimal.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Tilt head back, pull down lower eyelid to form a pocket, instill drop, and gently close eye. Avoid touching the dropper tip to the eye or any other surface.
Mechanism of Action
Ketromin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination, leading to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Clinical improvement often observed within 2-3 days of treatment.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via urine if any systemic absorption occurs; however, most of the topically applied drug is cleared locally or through tear drainage.
Half life
Not well characterized for topical ophthalmic use due to minimal systemic absorption, but active drug concentrations persist in ocular tissues for several hours.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following topical ocular administration. Local concentrations in ocular tissues are significantly higher than plasma levels.
Metabolism
Limited systemic metabolism due to minimal absorption. Likely metabolized in the liver if systemically absorbed, but this is negligible for topical application.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to ketromin or any other fluoroquinolone
- •Viral or fungal eye infections
Drug Interactions
Systemic fluoroquinolones
Minimal systemic absorption, so interactions with systemic drugs are unlikely.
Other topical ophthalmic medications
Allow at least 5 minutes between applying different eye drops.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Topical ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. If accidental ingestion occurs, seek medical advice. Ocular overdose can be flushed out with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor.
