Maprocin 200 mg Injection is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
200 mg every 8-12 hours by intravenous (IV) infusion over 30-60 minutes.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment typically required unless significant renal impairment is present. Monitor renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required. For CrCl 30-50 mL/min: 200 mg every 12-24 hours. For CrCl <30 mL/min: 200 mg every 24-48 hours.
How to Take
Maprocin 200 mg Injection is administered intravenously (IV) via slow infusion over 30-60 minutes or intramuscularly (IM) into a large muscle mass. Do not administer by rapid IV bolus.
Mechanism of Action
Maprocin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30 minutes after IV administration.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged via the kidneys (renal excretion).
Half life
Approximately 1.5 to 2 hours.
Absorption
Rapid and complete absorption after intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to Maprocin or any other beta-lactam antibiotics (e.g., penicillins, cephalosporins).
- History of severe allergic reactions to any component of the injection.
Drug Interactions
Probenecid
May increase Maprocin levels by reducing renal excretion.
Loop Diuretics
May increase the risk of ototoxicity or nephrotoxicity.
Aminoglycosides
Concurrent use may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
Oral Anticoagulants (e.g., Warfarin)
May enhance the anticoagulant effect; monitor INR.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children. Reconstituted solution should be used immediately.
Overdose
In case of overdose, supportive care is recommended. Hemodialysis may be effective in removing Maprocin from the blood.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have not shown harm to the fetus, but adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women are lacking. Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Maprocin is excreted in breast milk; caution should be exercised when administered to a nursing mother.
