Overview of the medicine
Merocil contains Cefixime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults and children over 12 years: 200 mg once daily or 400 mg once daily, depending on infection severity. For uncomplicated gonorrhea, 400 mg single dose.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment needed unless severe renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment required for creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. For best absorption, it is often recommended with food to minimize gastrointestinal upset.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.

Primarily renal (glomerular filtration and tubular secretion); some biliary excretion.

Side Effects
Contraindications

Drug Interactions
Warfarin
Increased prothrombin time/INR. Monitor coagulation parameters.
Carbamazepine
Elevated carbamazepine levels due to reduced metabolism.
Oral Contraceptives
Reduced efficacy of oral contraceptives (rare). Advise additional contraceptive methods.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Gastric lavage, symptomatic and supportive treatment. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing cefixime.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy category B. Use with caution during pregnancy if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; generally considered compatible with breastfeeding, but monitor infant for potential side effects (e.g., diarrhea, candidiasis).
