Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other ocular infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Instill 1 drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment necessary.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment necessary for ophthalmic use.
How to Take
For topical ophthalmic use only. Do not touch the dropper tip to any surface to avoid contamination. Tilt head back, pull down the lower eyelid, and instill drop into the conjunctival sac. Close eye gently for a few seconds. If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase (topoisomerase II) and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bacterial cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset, typically within minutes to hours for symptom relief.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys and bile after systemic absorption, but locally cleared by tear turnover.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 12-14 hours, but ocular half-life is shorter due to tear turnover.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption after ocular administration. High concentrations achieved in tear film and ocular tissues.
Metabolism
Minimally metabolized in the eye. Systemically, it undergoes hepatic metabolism.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other fluoroquinolones, or any component of the formulation.
Drug Interactions
Other Eye Drops
If using other eye drops, wait at least 5 minutes between applications to avoid dilution.
Systemic Absorption
No significant systemic drug interactions are expected with ophthalmic moxifloxacin due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store at room temperature (below 30°C). Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Ocular overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity due to limited absorption. Flush eye(s) with lukewarm water if excess drops are administered.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Caution advised during lactation; consult a doctor.
