Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxilocin-05 Eye Ointment is an antibiotic medication used to treat bacterial infections of the eye, such as bacterial conjunctivitis and other superficial ocular infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1/2 inch ribbon) of ointment into the conjunctival sac of the affected eye(s) 3 times daily for 7 days.
Elderly
No dosage adjustment is typically required for elderly patients.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is needed for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before application. Avoid touching the tip of the ointment tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to the cessation of bacterial growth and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action, typically within minutes of application.
Excretion
If systemically absorbed, it is primarily excreted via renal and fecal routes. However, most of the drug remains localized in the eye.
Half life
Systemic half-life is approximately 11-15 hours, but local ocular concentrations are paramount for efficacy.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption occurs following ophthalmic administration, resulting in low plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Limited systemic metabolism, with most of the drug remaining unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin, other quinolones, or any component of the formulation.
- Viral or fungal eye infections.
Drug Interactions
Systemic Drugs
Due to minimal systemic absorption, no significant systemic drug interactions are expected with ophthalmic moxifloxacin.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15-30°C) in an upright position. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze.
Overdose
Ophthalmic overdose is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. If excessive amounts are applied, the eye(s) may be flushed with lukewarm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administering to a nursing mother. Consult a physician.
