Description
Overview of the medicine
Nerfid 150 mg capsule is used to treat neuropathic pain, which is pain caused by nerve damage. It helps to reduce nerve pain by affecting calcium channels in the central nervous system.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Initial dose 150 mg daily, divided into 2 or 3 doses. May be increased to 300 mg daily within 1 week, based on response and tolerability, up to a maximum of 600 mg daily.
Elderly
May require lower initial doses and slower titration due to potential for reduced renal function and increased sensitivity.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment necessary; consult product leaflet or physician for specific guidelines based on creatinine clearance.
How to Take
Take orally with or without food. Swallow the capsule whole with water. Do not chew, crush, or open the capsule.
Mechanism of Action
Nerfid is thought to exert its analgesic and anxiolytic effects by binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-dependent calcium channels in the central nervous system, thereby modulating the release of several excitatory neurotransmitters.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Pain relief usually starts within 1-2 weeks of consistent use.
Excretion
Excreted almost entirely by the kidneys as unchanged drug.
Half life
Approximately 6-8 hours.
Absorption
Rapidly absorbed after oral administration; peak plasma concentrations reached within 1 hour.
Metabolism
Minimal hepatic metabolism; primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Nerfid or any component of the formulation.
- Severe kidney disease without appropriate dose adjustment.
Drug Interactions
Opioids (e.g., Morphine, Oxycodone)
May increase the risk of respiratory depression and sedation. Monitor for signs of central nervous system depression.
Central Nervous System (CNS) depressants (e.g., Benzodiazepines, Alcohol)
Increased risk of drowsiness, dizziness, and sedation. Avoid concomitant use or use with caution.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place, below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include drowsiness, confusion, agitation, and coma. Treatment is primarily supportive; hemodialysis may be considered in severe cases. There is no specific antidote.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies potential risk to the fetus. Excreted in breast milk; advise caution or consider alternative feeding methods during lactation.
