Description
Overview of the medicine
Moxifloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis and other susceptible superficial ocular bacterial infections. It works by killing the bacteria that cause the infection.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a small amount (approximately 1/2 inch ribbon) into the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days, or as directed by a physician.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment is required for elderly patients. Follow adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No dosage adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment due to minimal systemic absorption.
How to Take
For ophthalmic use only. Wash hands thoroughly before and after application. Gently pull down the lower eyelid and apply a small ribbon of ointment inside the eyelid. Avoid touching the tip of the tube to the eye or any other surface to prevent contamination. Close the eye gently for a moment. If using other eye medications, wait at least 5 minutes between applications.
Mechanism of Action
Moxifloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to bactericidal activity.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Rapid onset of action at the site of infection.
Excretion
Not applicable; systemic excretion is not relevant for topical ophthalmic use.
Half life
Not applicable for topical eye application due to negligible systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from ophthalmic administration, resulting in very low plasma concentrations.
Metabolism
Not applicable; systemic metabolism is not relevant for topical ophthalmic use.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or other fluoroquinolones
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the ointment
Drug Interactions
None significant for topical ophthalmic use
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption.
Storage
Store below 30°C. Protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Accidental overdose with topical ophthalmic administration is unlikely to cause systemic toxicity. If excess ointment is applied, it can be rinsed from the eye(s) with warm water.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy only if clearly needed and the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Exercise caution when administered to a nursing woman.
