Description
Overview of the medicine
Oxycort is a combination medicine containing an antibiotic (Oxytetracycline) and a corticosteroid (Hydrocortisone). It is used to treat bacterial skin or eye infections where inflammation is also present, providing both anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-3 times daily. For eye ointment, apply a small amount to the conjunctival sac 2-3 times daily.
Elderly
No specific dose adjustment required, use adult dosage.
Renal_impairment
No specific dose adjustment required for topical use.
How to Take
For skin ointment: Clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a thin layer and gently rub in. Do not use occlusive dressings unless advised by a doctor. For eye ointment: Wash hands thoroughly before application. Apply a small ribbon of ointment inside the lower eyelid.
Mechanism of Action
Oxytetracycline is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that suppresses inflammatory responses by inhibiting the release of inflammatory mediators and altering gene expression.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Local effects typically observed within hours of application.
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally if systemically absorbed, but negligible for topical use.
Half life
Not significantly relevant for topical application due to minimal systemic absorption.
Absorption
Minimal systemic absorption from intact skin or ocular surface. Absorption increases with inflammation, skin damage, or occlusive dressings.
Metabolism
Any absorbed hydrocortisone is primarily metabolized in the liver.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- •Hypersensitivity to Oxytetracycline, Hydrocortisone, or any component of the formulation
- •Viral infections of the skin (e.g., herpes simplex, varicella)
- •Fungal or yeast infections of the skin
- •Tuberculosis of the skin
- •Primary bacterial infections without inflammation (e.g., impetigo for skin ointment)
- •Glaucoma (for eye ointment)
- •Perioral dermatitis, rosacea, acne vulgaris (for skin ointment)
Drug Interactions
0
Systemic drug interactions are unlikely due to minimal systemic absorption from topical use.
Storage
Store below 25°C, protect from light and moisture. Do not freeze. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Topical overdose is unlikely to cause acute systemic problems. Prolonged or excessive use over large areas may lead to systemic corticosteroid effects, such as Cushing's syndrome, adrenal suppression, or secondary infections. Management is symptomatic and supportive.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Use during pregnancy or lactation only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus or infant. Consult a doctor before use.
