Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is an oral third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Adults: Typically 200-400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily (for tablets/capsules). For children (6 months to 12 years) using suspension: 8 mg/kg/day orally, as a single dose or in two divided doses for 5-10 days.
Elderly
No specific dosage adjustment required for elderly patients unless renal impairment is present.
Renal_impairment
Dosage adjustment is necessary for patients with creatinine clearance less than 60 mL/min.
How to Take
Can be taken with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Use the provided measuring spoon or cup to ensure accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
It inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Typically within 1-2 hours.
Excretion
Renal excretion (approx. 50% of absorbed dose).
Half life
About 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% orally absorbed. Food slightly prolongs Tmax but does not significantly affect the extent of absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized. Primarily excreted unchanged.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Known hypersensitivity to cefixime or any other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of severe hypersensitivity reaction to penicillin.
Drug Interactions
Nifedipine
Concurrent use may increase cefixime absorption.
Carbamazepine
Cefixime may increase carbamazepine levels. Monitor carbamazepine levels.
Warfarin and other anticoagulants
May increase prothrombin time (INR) and risk of bleeding. Close monitoring is advised.
Storage
Store the dry powder at room temperature (below 30°C), protected from light and moisture. Keep the reconstituted suspension refrigerated (2-8°C) and do not freeze.
Overdose
In case of overdose, gastric lavage may be indicated. Symptomatic and supportive treatment is recommended. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not effective in removing cefixime from the body.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category B. Studies in animals have shown no evidence of harm to the fetus. Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. Excreted in breast milk in small amounts; use with caution in lactating mothers.
