Description
Overview of the medicine
Procin 250 mg Tablet contains Ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections including urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and bone and joint infections.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
Typical adult dosage for uncomplicated UTIs is 250 mg twice daily for 3 days; for other infections, 250-750 mg twice daily depending on infection severity and site.
Elderly
Dosage adjustment may be necessary based on renal function.
Renal_impairment
Dose reduction is required for creatinine clearance <50 mL/min.
How to Take
Orally, with or without food. Do not take with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices alone. Take at least two hours before or six hours after taking antacids containing magnesium or aluminum, or iron/zinc supplements.
Mechanism of Action
Ciprofloxacin inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes involved in bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to disruption of bacterial DNA and cell death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Within 30-60 minutes
Excretion
Primarily excreted renally (50-70% as unchanged drug) and to a lesser extent via the fecal route.
Half life
Approximately 3-5 hours
Absorption
Rapidly and well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; bioavailability is approximately 70-80%.
Metabolism
Limited hepatic metabolism; primarily forms four active metabolites (desethyleneciprofloxacin, sulfociprofloxacin, oxociprofloxacin, and formylciprofloxacin).
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones
- Concomitant administration with tizanidine
- History of tendinopathy associated with quinolone use
Drug Interactions
NSAIDs
Increased risk of CNS stimulation and convulsions (rare).
Warfarin
Enhanced anticoagulant effect, increased bleeding risk.
Tizanidine
Increased risk of hypotension and somnolence.
Theophylline
Increased plasma levels of theophylline, leading to toxicity.
Antacids (Mg/Al), Iron/Zinc supplements
Decreased absorption of ciprofloxacin. Separate administration by at least 2-6 hours.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
Overdose
Overdose symptoms may include dizziness, tremor, headache, tiredness, seizures, abdominal pain, renal impairment, and crystalluria. Treatment involves gastric lavage, emesis, activated charcoal, and supportive care. Hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis is not very effective.
Pregnancy & Lactation
Pregnancy Category C. Use only if potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Ciprofloxacin is excreted into breast milk. Discontinue nursing or the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
