Description
Overview of the medicine
Roxim 25 mg Pediatric Drop contains Roxithromycin, a macrolide antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections in children. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Neonates
Not generally recommended for neonates unless specifically indicated and under strict medical supervision.
Infants_children
5-8 mg/kg body weight per day, given as a single dose or divided into two doses. Typically, for 25 mg/ml drop, this translates to specific drops per kg.
Renal_impairment
Dose adjustment may be necessary in severe renal impairment; consult physician.
How to Take
Administer orally, preferably before meals (at least 15 minutes before) for better absorption. Use the provided dropper for accurate dosing.
Mechanism of Action
Roxithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible microorganisms, thereby interfering with translocation reactions and preventing the incorporation of amino acids into growing peptide chains. It is primarily bacteriostatic but can be bactericidal at high concentrations against certain organisms.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies by infection type and severity, typically within hours.
Excretion
Primarily excreted unchanged in feces (about 65%) and a smaller portion via urine (about 10%) and bile.
Half life
Approximately 10-12 hours in adults, longer in children.
Absorption
Rapidly but incompletely absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract; food may delay absorption. Bioavailability is about 50-60%.
Metabolism
Partially metabolized in the liver to inactive metabolites.
