Description
Overview of the medicine
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections including those of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, and skin.
Uses & Indications
Dosage
Adults
400 mg once daily or 200 mg twice daily, depending on the infection. Duration varies from 7 to 14 days.
Elderly
Similar to adults, but dose adjustment may be required in patients with significant renal impairment.
Renal_impairment
For creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min, dose adjustment is required (e.g., 200 mg once daily).
How to Take
Take orally, with or without food. To ensure full absorption, it can be taken at the same time each day.
Mechanism of Action
Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to bacterial cell lysis and death.
Pharmacokinetics
Onset
Varies with the type and severity of infection.
Excretion
Primarily excreted via the kidneys (about 50-60% as unchanged drug) and biliary excretion.
Half life
Plasma half-life of about 3-4 hours.
Absorption
Approximately 40-50% absorbed orally. Food may delay but not significantly reduce absorption.
Metabolism
Not extensively metabolized in the body.
Side Effects
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to Cefixime or other cephalosporin antibiotics.
- History of anaphylaxis to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Drug Interactions
Warfarin
May increase prothrombin time and INR; monitor coagulation parameters.
Nifedipine
May increase Cefixime plasma levels.
Carbamazepine
May increase carbamazepine plasma levels; monitor carbamazepine levels.
Storage
Store below 30°C in a dry place, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep out of reach of children.
